DENTAL INLAYS & ONLAYS

Inlays and onlays are effective restorative treatments that are custom-made fillings of composite material, gold or tooth-coloured porcelain. They are mostly used to repair severely weakened or damaged back teeth when a white filling is not adequate. Dental inlays and onlays are more conservative than dental crowns as less tooth structure is removed in the preparation of treatment. Dental inlays as like fillings sit in between the cusps of the back teeth whereas dental onlays slightly larger and cover one or more chewing cusps.

Reasons for dental inlay and onlay restorations:

  • Cosmetic enhancement
  • Broken or fractured teeth
  • Decayed teeth
  • Fractured fillings
  • Large fillings

What Does Getting A Dental Inlay And Onlay Involve?

An inlay and onlay procedure usually requires two appointments. During you first appointment you dentist take several highly accurate impressions that will be used to create your custom inlay or onlay and a temporary restoration.

Any decay and/or old filling materials will be removed and the space will then be thoroughly cleaned and carefully prepared for inlay or onlay restoration. In the meantime, a temporary filling will be applied to your tooth until new dental inlay or onlay is fabricated for you.

At your second appointment, your temporary filling will be removed and new inlay or onlay will be carefully cemented into place. A few adjustments may be necessary to ensure the fit and bite are accurate.

You dentist will give you care instructions upon completion of the treatment. Good oral hygiene practices, a proper diet, and regular dental visits will assist in the life of your new dental inlay or onlay.
