DENTAL CROWN

Dental crowns are often used to restore a tooth that has been extensively damaged or weakened through injury and decay. If the damage is minimal then a simple white filling or teeth bonding may be adequate. However, for extensively damaged or weakened teeth those above options is inappropriate and dental crowns are recommended and usually used to rebuild the tooth after root canal treatment.

Although there are several types of crowns, porcelain or ceramic crowns are the most popular. In the past, dental crowns relied upon on metal frames, which was become visible at the gum line when gums naturally recede with age. However, highly durable metal-free crowns can be an option for more aesthetic results.

Reasons for crowns

  • Cosmetic enhancement
  • Fractured or broken teeth
  • Decayed teeth
  • Fractured fillings
  • Large fillings
  • Tooth has a root canal

What Does Getting A Crown Involve?

Dental crown procedure usually requires two appointments. During your first appointment, you dentist will prepare the teeth by removing any possible decay and shaping the surface to properly fit the dental crown. Then you dentist will take several impressions that will be used to create your custom crown. In the meantime, temporary acrylic crown will stay on your tooth until new crown is fabricated for you.

At your second appointment, your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be carefully placed to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.

You dentist will give you care instructions upon completion of the treatment. With proper care and attention, dental crowns should last for many years – which is where we need your assistance.
